The Big Lottery Fund has awarded Naturezones Wildlife Education Trust £10,000 for its “Brush
with Nature” project.
“A Brush with Nature” is aimed at influencing a lasting interest in nature and the conservation of
nature through the arts.
This pilot project lasts for a year and will include in-school workshops with 4 primary schools
and out-reach work-shops at various venues around the island. These venues will include The Dinosaur Museum, Newtown Nature Reserve, and Wroxall Community Centre.
Project manger and professional artist Angela Hewitt says “We are hugely encouraged by this award
and that the Lottery Board recognises that it is important to encourage a wider interest in the natural environment through different approaches.”
The idea for this project evolved last year when working with primary school children on their
wildlife-habitats theme. We saw that the children were most engaged when given the opportunity to be creative. Art is a subtle way of encouraging an interest in all
subjects and the natural science is no exception.
Angela says “I can testify to this as all my top subjects at school evolved around the artistic
approach such as biology, geography, history, English literature. The “Brush with Nature” work-shops will encourage observation skills, drawing techniques, composition
skills and creative thinking skills. There will be painting with watercolours as well as the main matter at hand, nature studies. The out-reach workshops are for all
ages and we hope that all of the family will get involved.”
